The Great Wisconsin Headwaters Trail System
The ever increasing need for alternate modes of off-road transportation has seen the popularity for hiking, biking, running and walking trails in the Northwoods region grow. In 2009, after seeing how the Three Eagles Trail and the Land O’ Lakes Trail attracted a new aspect of family activity, a group was formed with the goal of connecting existing trails, but more importantly, connecting towns in Vilas County in a full network of trails. In 2010 the Great Wisconsin Headwaters Trail System was organized and submitted a plan to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation for a multi-use Transportation Enhancement (TE) grant. Their efforts paid off when Conover received a letter from the State Governor approving their project. The Conover project includes a trail of crushed limestone that will permit snowmobiling during the winter and other modes of transportation in the summer utilizing over 90% of abandoned railroad bed. Conover was 1 of 47 selected bicycle-pedestrian infrastructure projects funded 80/20 for the current funding cycle.
Project certification process began in early 2011. Professional design and engineering will begin in the summer of 2011 with project construction to take place between July 2012 and 2013. During the construction phase, three bridges will be constructed (two of which will be visible on US Hwy 45) and the facility trail head will be the Conover Town Park with construction of new restroom facilities. The Great Wisconsin Headwaters Trail Foundation has ongoing plans for continued segments to connect to Eagle River, Phelps and Land O’ Lakes by 2020. Individual/family Charter Members, as well as supporters for the foundation, are welcome to become involved to assist this group in bringing new and exciting development in Northern Wisconsin.
