The Pioneer Creek X-country Ski Trail
Few sights fill the heart with peace like the beauty of the Northwood’s forests in winter. Whether it’s the sun sparkling off the blanket of white, the sharp tingle of a breath of icy air or the silence broken occasionally by the harsh call of Blue Jays, something magical happens. One of the more popular ways to enjoy this is on X-Country skis. This year the new Pioneer Creek X-Country Ski Trail is the place to find it.
Opening this winter in Conover, just a short drive from the surrounding communities, is the expanded cross country ski trail, a joint effort by the Town of Conover and Vilas Country. Beginning in the Conover Town Park, located just east of Hwy 45 on County Road K, the new facility offers over 15 miles (24 kilometers) of groomed trails. The trail consists of four loops ranging from 1.5 miles to 6 miles. Future plans include another almost 7 mile loop. Although not yet rated, the trail provides any level of skier an exhilarating experience.
For the non-skiers, the town park offers one of the most popular sledding hills in the area, an open pavilion, ice skating rink, HEATED (!!!!) restrooms and ample parking with plenty of room to tailgate.
Be sure to add this to your winter plans!
