Great Headwaters Trail Foundation

The Great Headwaters Trails foundation’s goal is to build 40 miles of biking and walking trails in eastern Vilas County, the headwaters of the Wisconsin River.

The first leg of the Great Headwaters Trails system is the newly completed Conover-Phelps Trail.

When completed, the Great Headwaters Trails system will connect the towns of Land O’ Lakes, Conover, Phelps, and Eagle River and beyond to the Three Eagles Trail, Heart of Vilas Trail and Wilderness Lakes Trail.

A grand vision – a connecting system of over 110 miles of trails.

Play in Conover

This 22 mile route connects Eagle River with the Land O’Lakes Bike Trail in Land O’Lakes. The route follows quiet forested roads and lakes along the way. The ride is relatively easy with some gentle hills. There is an opportunity for food and rest about halfway along the route. Parking is available at the Eagle River end of the route.

Fat Tire bicycles can utilize the Pioneer Creek Trail System during spring thru fall.  The trail starts in the Conover Town Park. This trail cannot be used during the winter, as this trail system is groomed for cross country and skate skiing. During the summer, this hunter/ hiker system has about 60 miles of connected trails.  A location for winter time usage is in the works. Please keep checking our website for updates.
